William Roote was born in Soham on 13th March 1879 (Newmarket Q2-1879 3B:566), baptised in Soham on 31st January 1880, son of Francis Nethercote and Mary ROOTE (née LANE) of Bull Lane, Soham.

1881 census...Aged 2, he was at Clay Street, Soham with his father Francis ROOTE [30] horsekeeper born Soham, and his mother Mary [26] born Soham.

1891 census...Aged 12, he was at Clay Street, Soham, with his parents (father now a builder's labourer);brother Theophilus [7]; sisters Maud [10], Annie E [5] and Elizabeth M. [1]. All the children were born in Soham.

1901 census...Not yet found in this census
His parents were at Paddock Street, Soham ( father a horse keeper/builder); brother Theophilus F, (butcher's assistant), Frank [5]; sisters Elizabeth and Doris M [2], born in Soham.

1911 census...Not found in this census. His parents; brother Frank (errand boy at boot shop) and sister Doris (scholar) were at Paddock Street, Soham.

His younger brother Frank Phillip ROOTE died at home after Army discharge with TB. They are buried together in Soham Cemetery with a double headstone see here


Apart from his CWGC records, there is nothing else regarding his Army life on line, no medal card (which normally indicates no overseas service), no "Soldiers Died" entry (but that is probably due to his dying at home, no silver badge, no "Soldier's Personal Effects", nothing can be found. The prefix "F" to his Army number indicates he was in the forage department of the A.S.C.
Possibly the William ROOTE, aged 38 died Chelmsford Q4-1917 4A:586. There were military hospitals in that area but so far have only found the Leprosy Isolation hospital in East Hanningfield. The William Roote in Soham cemetery was originally buried in East Hanningfield cemetery but was exhumed and re-interred in Soham on November 3rd according to burial records in Soham.
